Chapter 11

Alex had a difficult time getting to sleep even after reading the challenging and somewhat dry philosophy book Patrick gave him. Restless, Alex wandered the ship, the conversation with Patrick and the argument with Millie going round for round in his head with neither discussion taking up more space than the other. He finally stopped in the hangar after visiting the galley for a mug of warm milk.

Save for the rhythmic hum of the Solstice’s engines, the ship was quiet and buttoned up for the evening. When he first came aboard, Alex thought a ship this size would make all sorts of racket in the air, what with girders and wires and little insulation to deaden the noises. But now, Alex found the atmosphere unexpectedly peaceful as he made his way up the gantry to his Tempest.

As he slipped into the cramped cockpit, he noticed a stack of paperwork that’d been placed atop the instrument panel. Setting his warm milk aside, he reached for the bound paperwork and gave it a gander. It was a manual on the plane. On the inside cover, Hughes had inscribed a note:

Everything you need to know about the Tempest is here, along with a few other things I’ve noted. I’m not sure if Crosby is going to go over this with you or not, but I wanted to make sure you knew exactly what kind of a plane you’ve got under your control. I hope it helps. Regards, Howard Hughes

Alex smiled. Not only was he going to discover all the nuts and bolts of this plane, but he now had a signed keepsake for their mission. In some ways, it was like a trophy won after a hard-fought race. In others, he felt he should hold it with more reverence. After all, Hughes had taken the time, no matter how little, to single out Alex and provide this tailored manual. He contemplated if this was the same way Patrick felt when he’d been gifted the personalized philosophy book years ago. Shaking the thoughts from his head, he flipped open the manual and began comparing the diagrams and text to what he saw on the actual instrument cluster.
